Fiber, Charcoal and Pastels
Cathrin Von Bank grew up in Fargo, ND and comes from an artistic family where creativity was encouraged. Cathrin attended NDSU where she majored in fashion design and minored in fine art and theatre. Highlights of her career include costume designer for both Trollwood Performing Arts School and the Fargo-Moorhead Community Theater before attending graduate school pursuing her MFA in theatrical costume design at Indiana University, Bloomington. She also spent a season with the Dayton ballet as the assistant costume designer before finding her way back to NDSU as instructor and costume designer for the university.
Happily, Cathrin put her career on hold to raise her son, Andrew. Only since 2016 has she seriously pursued her artistic endeavors, combining her love of fashion and the human figure. She creates three-dimensional textile pieces which she likens to deconstructed couture. She uses fibers as another artist might use paint. The human face, figure and form is a common theme in Cathrin’s renderings which is an homage to her fashion and costume design background. She gravitates to charcoal and soft pastels but will dabble and experiment with almost any medium.
