Ceramics
Dionna Martel is a ceramic artist and is currently pursuing her Bachelor of Fine Arts degree at North Dakota State University - NDSU.
Her love for ceramics began when she was a young girl while visiting her family in New Mexico. While there she watched a demonstration on how the pueblo potter Maria Martinez made her pots. Dionna was immediately fascinated! In high school she took a ceramics class and fell in love with clay. Although she didn’t pursue an art career, she always dreamed of making ceramic art and having her own studio.
Eventually, she took ceramic classes offered at The Plains Art Museum. As an NDSU employee she has the benefit of taking classes on campus and began taking the ceramics classes. Eventually, she decided to pursue her Bachelor of Fine Arts.
Dionna has always been deeply curious and eager to learn about the world, history, art, languages, and different cultures. Ceramic arts are one of the earliest art forms with global influences that continuously captivate her. She knows she’ll never tire of exploring the craft; whether it’s experimenting with different types of clay, making glazes, learning different decorative techniques, or discovering unique firing methods. There is an endless world of knowledge to discover.
She wants her art to reflect her curiosity and passion in exploring the ceramic arts. She looks forward to everyone seeing the pieces she creates.
