Printmaking and Collage
In her artistic practice, Anna Johnson seeks to bridge the gap between her immediate surroundings and the rich cultural heritage in which she belongs. Anna says her pieces serve as an expression of the emotions stirred within her by encounters with discrimination and profound desire to instigate change in the realms of social injustice, religion and spirituality. She engages with the comment on the daily challenges faced by Native Americans, women, lesbians and individuals worldwide.
Anna has deep roots in her Chippewa culture, the imagery in her artwork draws inspiration from a variety of totem animals and tradition designs. While exploring multiple artistic media, her true passion lies in printmaking and collage. Using textures, fabrics and organic elements such as birch bark, sage, yarrow and cedar, she crafts pieces to incorporate the layers and dimensionality to her creative process. When embracing relief printmaking, she meticulously carves away, layer by layer, sculpting each piece until it reaches completion. This process allows her to create work with depth and substance that resonates with the narratives she aims to convey. In turn, collagraph printmaking, facilitates the creation of textures reminiscent of collage-work and imparts impressions on the paper that stand unique among other artistic mediums.
Anna says through my art, she aspires to provide a platform for dialogue and reflections on issues that often go unnoticed. By delving into the complexities of culture, discrimination and societal challenges, she strives to contribute to a broader understanding and awareness. Each piece is a testament to her commitment to addressing these issues, employing the visual language derived from her cultural roots and the diverse array of media that she explores with each piece.
